The remote also functions as a portable dial-home device. If on a mission with an away team, the remote keeps an accurate countdown of time before the Destiny departs from the Stargate network.

Since there are no dial-home devices paired with Destiny-type Stargates, an Ancient remote is the only solution for dialing home. If a member of the team leaves with the only remote, the remaining team members are stranded unless another remote is sent back from the ship.
